State boys team heads interstate in April

01 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
GOLF Tasmania has announced the 2012 boys state team to contest the interstate series at Bribie Island in April.

Following the final selection event at Greens Beach on Friday, Golf Tasmania board member Craig Clark announced the team at the presentation ceremony.

The team comprises Ben Elliott and Mitchell Clark, both of Smithton Golf Club, Braden Figg, of the Tasmania club, Sam Rawlings, of Riverside, and two newcomers to the team in Jack Tregaskisjago, of Prospect Vale, and Isaac Pinnington, of Riverside.

In addition Luke Gilbert, of the Tasmania club, and Kade Philpott, of Riverside, were named in the development squad and will travel with the team to Queensland.

Daniel Blackwell is team coach and Rod Eiszele is team manager.

Junior Masters

It was a big week of golf for the state's juniors last week, with 72 holes played at Launceston in the Tasmanian Junior Masters on Monday and Tuesday, followed by the Tamar Valley Junior Cup at Greens Beach on Thursday and Friday.

Officials were concerned at the impact of the heat on competitors and the late finishing time at Greens Beach and made the appropriate decision to reduce the event to 54 holes, with only 18 holes played on Friday rather than 36.

Ben Elliott was the leading Tasmanian in the Junior Masters and continued in similar fashion at Greens Beach to finish in 8th place.

Sam Rawlings tied for 14th in Launceston and played exceptional golf at Greens Beach, finishing at six under par before losing in a playoff against Queenslander Viraat Badhwar.

Senior amateurs

Victorian Ross Percy begins the defence of his senior amateur championship title today when over 80 competitors tee off in this year's event at Mowbray.

Percy won in sensational style last year with an eagle at the final hole.

Also playing are Australian representatives Vince Clark and Alan Bullas and top 20 players John Wheeler and Mike Peeck.

Local hope is former winner Mike Leedham.

Professionals Clint Rice, Kalem Richardson and Craig Hancock will be the focus for spectators in today's $7000 pro am at Country Club Tasmania.

Play gets under way at 11am.

Senior open

Mike Harwood has won the Tasmanian senior open at Kingston Beach with a six under 65 after the second round was washed out.

He has now won three of the last four titles. David Good took second place with 67.
