Percy back to defend amateur title

28 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
A STRONG field of 82 golfers will tee off in the 2012 Tasmanian senior amateur championship at the Mowbray Golf Club next week.

The three-day, 54-hole tournament, which starts on Wednesday, is an Australian Senior Order of Merit event.

This year again sees a very strong contingent of mainland players vying for the honour of winning the championship.

Last year's winner, Ross Percy, will be back to defend his title and will have strong competition with many players on a two handicap or lower.

``Competitors will hit off at 9.30 each day off both front and back tees for anyone wishing to see some exciting golf,'' Mowbray Golf Club executive officer Adrian Dennis said.

``Mowbray champion Mike Leedham, a previous winner of four Tasmanian senior championships, has again entered and on his home course will be difficult to beat.''

Dennis said Mowbray Golf Club's course superintendent Shane Knott had advised that the course was in good condition despite a lack of rain during January.
