OPENING days are in full swing with Bridport, Riverside and Freycinet under way for the season.
Although numbers were down a little at Bridport, the club raised about $1300 for Family Day Care North Dorset Respite House thanks to entries, trade table, tombola, cake walks and a raffle.
Marilyn Theisel, Robyn Hatton, Jeanette Elmore and Collina Murchison, of Mowbray, won from Bridport-Scottsdale's Kath Lovegrove, Anne Adams, Julie Collins and Helen Fletcher, followed by Meg Furlonge, Roz Caldwell, Anita Barry and Cheryl Richards.
Riverside
SUE Gibson stole the show at Riverside with a hole-in-one at the 17th. The other pin winners were Roseanne Byrne, Betty Piesse and Cheryl Atkins.
Winners in division 1 were Debbie Bushby and Sue Shea from Anne Roberts and Jan Bishop. June Davidson and Ann Rae won division 2 with an excellent 64 1/2 net from Jan Main and Sharon Ellis on 65.
Division 1 putting went to Libby Lawson and Christine Wadley on a four-way count-back and Davidson and Rae in division 2.
Pauline Pearson had 40 points to win Thursday's 18 holes, while Edith Clarke and Pat Westlake won the nine-hole events.
The Riverside Golf Club is hosting the Northern foursome championship on February 26. Entry forms are available at clubs now.
Freycinet
FREYCINET'S women members enjoyed their L'Oreal open day last Thursday with 55 players representing Orford, Swansea, Bicheno, St Marys, St Helens, Scamander River, Riverside, Wynyard and Launceston taking part. Trophy winners were: division 1 Glynnis Williams, division 2 Violy McPartlin, division 3 Barbara Ferrall and division 4 Yvonne Turvey.
North-West titles
WHAT a great field Devonport has lined up for the North-West championships beginning tomorrow with the foursomes.
The East Coast clubs will be there in numbers, while the Northern clubs are also well represented.
St Helens
ST Helens' Bridget Cole won the nine-hole competition in the Summer Cup on a countback from Marion Green, plus the 18-hole event with 68 net from June Davis, 69, and Sandra Flack, 70.
The course is in great condition for opening day which is now on February 15 to avoid a clash with Scamander River.
Mowbray
BETH Gibson's score left everyone astounded when it was announced this week. Gibson had 88-28-60 net and saw her handicap reduced by two.
Maree Fish continues to improve and was delighted to get to a single figure handicap for the first time.
Coral Patmore managed 68 while her partner in crime, Jan Bishop, was at Riverside.
Louise Russell wielded her putter to success and Kaye O'Shea and Anna Waterhouse were under the card. Pin winners were C. Richards, Glenda Embery and Fliss Hunt. Chris Barlow won the Sunday competition.
The Mowbray Gala Day four-ball ambrose for men and women is on Sunday, February 12, with an 11 for 11.30am shot-gun start.

Tam O'Shanter
BETTER scores from the women in the Nielsen Perpetual Trophy at Tam O'Shanter, sponsored by the Mac Shop, included runner-up Bernice Shaw with 64 net and Irene Wicks, 66.
The club entertained about 160 people with a most enjoyable barbecue and 21-piece jazz band.
Business women
OTHERS who are making an impression at their clubs recently include Pip Leedham, who won the business women's competition at Launceston with 43 points, followed by Sheryl Manion, 37, and Allison Crerar, 35.
Longford
THE Longford opening day on February 6 is a foursome event with a 9 for 9.30am start.
