THE outstanding achievements of the Youd family from Deloraine are the centerpiece of a book to be launched next month.
Four of the seven Youd brothers were world champion axemen making their distinct mark on the sport during its golden age 40 years ago.
Doug, Merv, Ray and Bill won over 100 world titles between them and no family has dominated woodchopping in Australia as the Youds.
Now Victorian author Carla Evans is about to launch a 114-page book titled ``Youd Better Believe It'' which traces the history of the Youd family since it first settled at Quamby Brook in 1855.
``I felt very privileged to be able to write about the Youd family,'' Evans said.
``It is a family that the whole of Tasmania should be very proud of.''
It is the eighth book penned by Evans and she explained she first became aware of the Youd family after she and her husband Peter visited the Australian Axeman's Hall of Fame at Latrobe.
``I had written a book about the 12 legends of woodchopping who appear in the Axeman's Hall of Fame at Latrobe and was then asked if I was interested in writing about the Youds,'' she said.
Evans will make the trip from her home at Clifton Springs in Victoria for the book launch at Latrobe on February 17 at 7.30pm.
Lyons Labor MHA, Michael Polley has been invited to perform the official launch and there will be many other guests invited.
The story of the Youd family goes back to when great grandparents John and Mary Youd arrived from England.
A family tree which appears in the book then chronicles the family down to that of Albert and Elsie Youd who produced the world champion set of axemen.
Albert and Elsie raised a family of eight including brothers Trevor, Merv, Rex, Doug, Bob, Ray and Bill as well as their sister Margaret.
The book also contains many photographs featuring the Youd brothers in action in the wood chopping ring and anecdotes include Doug kissing legendary actress Gina Lollobrigida at the Sydney Royal Easter Show and Ray giving Prince Charles an escorted tour through the Styx Valley at Maydena.
Doug, Ray and Bill won the world tree felling championship 28 times between them at the Royal Sydney Show while Doug won the standing championship, recognised as the world title, four times.
