Tassie four go in AFL draft

27 Nov, 2009 07:35 AM
FOUR of Tasmania's best young footballing talents had their AFL football dreams realised last night when they were picked up in the 2009 NAB AFL national draft.

North Hobart defender Marcus Davies, Glenorchy midfielder Ryan Harwood, North Launceston midfielder Jesse Crichton and Clarence utility Jereomy Webberley were all successful in being drafted.

The four joined the North-West Coast's Luke Russell and Maverick Weller who have already been picked up by the new Gold Coast franchise.

It brought to six the number of Tasmanians drafted for 2009 - one of the state's best results.

Davies, Harwood and Crichton were all picked in round three of the draft.

Davies was the first Tasmanian selected at No. 43, by Carlton.

Harwood followed soon after at pick No. 47, by the Brisbane Lions.

Crichton was the very next selection at No. 48, to the Fremantle Dockers.

Webberley was the only mature- age Tasmanian draft pick as a 21-year-old.

He was selected by Richmond at pick No. 67 in round 5.

His selection confirmed the success of the inaugural Tasmanian State League in having one of its star players drafted from the competition.

"We are rapt with the draft for Tasmania and with Jereomy Webberley getting up was terrific news for the State League, for Jereome and for Clarence," Tasmanian high-performance manager Nick Probert said.

"To have the other three boys we were hopeful for but never certain of - getting all of them in the third round was a great result as well.

"To have six players drafted is a terrific result and we've still got the pre-season draft to go so we could add to that tally."

Probert said Carlton's selection of Davies and Brisbane's pick of Harwood continued those clubs' history of picking Tasmanian talent as both added to the stocks of Tasmanian talent on their lists.
