South pups to face the mighty Roos

08 Apr, 2010 09:54 AM
SOUTH LAUNCESTON will face the might of reigning premier Clarence when the Bulldog pups take on the Roos at Youngtown Oval on Saturday.

South scored a first-up victory over Lauderdale on the road last week with six 17-year-old players in its side while the Roos were awesome in accounting for Glenorchy in the grand final rematch.

South coach Dale Chugg said there was still plenty of room for improvement from his young side and expected Clarence to be "a real test".

"We've got nothing to lose and hopefully they will learn from the experience of being out there against the better sides and seeing how they go about it," Chugg said.

South will again be without the experienced Steven Mayne with Nic Buller returning through the reserves.

Ruckman Mitchell Hills who was a late withdrawal last week with an Achilles problem could be a chance to return if he passes a fitness test.

CLARENCE coach Brett Geappen was rapt with his side's performance against a quality side in Glenorchy.

He said one possible change might be his brother Matthew Geappen missing with knee soreness.

Geappen said South were usually hard to beat at home and the Roos needed to stamp their authority on the game early.

BURNIE will host LAUNCESTON at West Park with both sides first-up winners.

Dockers coach Brent Plant said the win over Devonport was a boost for the club, which has a lot of young players this season.

He said while enjoying the win, it was important for his side to focus on the Blues this week.

While having respect for the Blues as a professional outfit he said his side would back themselves for another win.

The Dockers had no injury worries but Plant flagged a couple of possible changes to the line-up when the side is finalised tonight.

Launceston coach Anthony Taylor will be keen for his side to continue its winning form after defeating North Launceston.

But the Blues will be without captain Scott Stephens who is likely to miss up to eight weeks with a broken jaw.

NORTH LAUNCESTON will take on DEVONPORT with both clubs coming off losses in round one.

The Northern Bombers will be without the suspended Adam Viney, while the Magpies have recalled Sam Widdowson.

Devonport coach Errol Bourn said his side had been poor in all areas of the game against Burnie but hopefully would bounce back this week.

Bourn said the Magpies needed to regroup but expected it would take time for some of his new players to gel as a team.

NORTH HOBART plays LAUDERDALE with coach Clinton Brown happy with his side's 10-goal win over Hobart at the TCA.

Brown said he was wary of an opposition which contained some unknown players but respected the toughness of coach Darren Winter.

The Demons will be unchanged.

Lauderdale coach Winter said he expected another tough encounter after a disappointing loss to South last week.

He said he would look at recalling the experience of 100-gamers Tim Dudgeon and Adam Joyce to the side and had stressed the importance of kicking long and direct into the forward line after going short through the midfield last week.

GLENORCHY will meet HOBART in the final match of the round on Sunday with both sides looking to rebound from first round defeats.
