Long set to win berth

BRENDAN Long, the Launceston rower nicknamed "Diesel", appears to have shown enough power to secure his spot for the Olympic Games.

Rowing Australia names its final squad for Beijing today and Long and Hobart pharmacist Kerry Hore are expected to take Tasmania's contingent to eight.

Both Tasmanian Institute of Sport scholarship holders did enough to confirm their second Olympics by performing with distinction at the final trials in Penrith last week.

Tamar rower Long, a 28-year-old rehabilitation therapist, should be named in the men's quad with Hore, 26, of New Norfolk, in the women's quad. Both represented Australia at Athens with Hore securing a bronze medal.

Lindisfarne duo Sam Beltz and Scott Brennan, Anthony Edwards and Kate Hornsey, of New Norfolk, and Huon's Tom Gibson have already secured their Olympic nominations with Tamar's Dominic Monypenny selected for the adaptive single scull at the Paralympics.

"This would be an excellent result for our rowing programme, building on the representation we had at Athens," said TIS director Paul Austen.

"It's a tribute to the dedication and commitment of the athletes and coaching staff."

Mr Austen said the result was particularly pleasing given the departure from the sport of Athens Olympians Simon Burgess, who has retired, and rowers-turned-cyclists Cameron Wurf and Dana Faletic.

He added that it represented the legacy of the late Sam Le Compte, whose achievements with Tasmanian rowing were being continued by Rhett Ayliffe and Ron Batt.

Rowing Australia met last night to endorse the squad which will must then be ratified by the Australian Olympic Committee. The Australian under-23 and junior squads will also be named today with Tasmania hopeful of eight inclusions.

The State had almost 20 per cent of the rowers competing for national selection at the Olympic trials.
