Northern junior team reigns in Burnie

27 May, 2009 08:55 AM
THE Tasmanian Team Tennis Challenge took place at the Burnie Tennis Centre over the weekend.

Under grey threatening clouds the event got under way without a drop of rain.

The three regions were represented by 16 players in the age groups of 12-and-under, 14-and-under, 16-and-under and 18-and- under, with two boys and two girls in each age group.

The Northern team took on the North-West in the first matches of the day. Led by 18-and- under players Sam Sheppard and Alex Clements the Northern team defeated the Coast 17 rubbers to 11 rubbers.

With not much rest the Northern team backed up against the Southern region, led by Tasmania's highest ranked junior Alyssa Hibberd.

The Northern team took its game up to another level as the competition got tight, and the regional spirit kicked in to another gear. In the end the Northern team rallied to defeat the Southern team 18 rubbers to 10 rubbers.

The Southern team then went on to defeat the North-West 19-9.

The final standings for the Tasmanian Team Tennis were, North 35 rubbers, South 29 rubbers, and North-West 20 rubbers.

The winning Northern team members were: Sam Sheppard, Alex Clements, Chantel Jamieson, Phoebe Davis, Tom Wigan, Liam Jarvis, Brittney Macrostie, Rosa Bishop, James De Boer, Ross Marzetti, Evie Francis, Connor Parke (fill in), Sam Clements, Hamish Youl, Megan De Boer and Rose Barker.

The event would not have taken place without the help of State coach Simon Youl, Northern coach-manager Andrew Youl and North-West manager Jamie Kay.

Look out for the next Tasmanian Team Tennis Challenge in August 2009, in Hobart.
