EXETER'S team of Karin Wells and Teresa Turmine yesterday defeated North Launceston's Edna O'Malley and Beryl Burch to take out the Bowls North Open Champion of Champions pairs.
Played on a 12.90-second green at the West Launceston Bowls Club the North team defeated Kings Meadows' Julie Bullman and Maureen Zoon by eight shots in their semi-final, while Exeter defeated Deloraine's Robyn Miller and Maureen Buckingham by 16 shots in its semi-final.
Exeter's Teresa Turmine was up against her mother in Beryl Burch in the final, and with each leading for their respective teams there was no lee-way given. Both played determined bowls, both wanting a win for their team and club. North put up a good effort but many times things would just not go its way. In the end Exeter outplayed it to take out the grand final by 17 shots.
Full credit to the two finalists for such a good showing after playing approximately seven hours of bowls in the one day.
In the minor pairs, Longford's Marlene Richardson and Colleen Shepherd continued on after winning their two games on Tuesday to beat Kings Meadows' Margaret Walker and Gyneth Norris in the grand final 18-16.
At a venue yet to be confirmed, the state final for all women's Champion of Champions winners will be held on the North-West Coast on April 1-2.
