Essendon sees state as lucrative football market

14 Apr, 2010 05:01 PM
ESSENDON would welcome the opportunity to play AFL games in Tasmania with the club admitting it sees the state as a lucrative potential market.

The comments come from the Bombers' Tasmanian-born chief executive officer and managing director Ian Robson who saw first-hand the opportunities his home state presents the national competition while at the helm of Hawthorn.

Having left the Hawks at the end of last season, Robson declined to say what he considered the best path forward for AFL football in Tasmania, but acknowledged the value of the state's die-hard supporters.

"Look at it this way, just because of the existence of West Coast and Fremantle certainly hasn't meant that we've backed off in terms of our commitment and presence in the WA market," Robson said.

"It's obviously helped by when we go over there and play games and that's reflected by the fact that we've got well over 2000 members in WA.

"Well we've got close on a thousand members in Tassie and I'd certainly be very keen, using that WA analogy, that we might find ways to interact with what we know is a very vibrant supporter-base for us.

"That might be activated by us being scheduled to play games down there or we might look to find other ways, whether that's through sending players down for sports nights or school holiday clinics, whatever.

"We'll certainly continue to explore that as we do any part of Australia where football is played."

With Essendon one of the few AFL clubs not to have played a roster game in Launceston, Robson said he would welcome the opportunity.

"We certainly would, whether that would be a home and away fixture or a NAB Cup game," said the 48-year-old father-of-two who spent five years with Hawthorn after a career that also took him to Sydney (twice), Canada, Auckland, Leeds and Edinburgh.

"At the moment, such is the drawing power of Essendon- Hawthorn games, they are both at the MCG this year.

Round 6 on a Saturday night I'm sure is going to be a massive crowd. Sometimes those games become a bit too big in terms of the crowd for the prospect of being relocated.

"But we'd love to go down there. We know we are well supported around the country and any chance we have to play in front of our supporters on the road is something we would enjoy and appreciate."

With Launceston's Tom Bellchambers, Sam Lonergan, of Beauty Point, and East Devonport's Jason Laycock on the Bombers' books, Hobart-born Robson is keen to develop the club's links to his home state.

"The Tassie boys are going well here. We keep an eye on each other and what is going on," he said.

"Having that Tasmanian connection is something I'm really proud of. You know how passionate I am about Tasmanian footy and giving Tasmanian players an opportunity. We've had some great Tasmanians at the club and I hope that can continue and those guys I'm sure will get their chances across the season."
