Clarence, Blues kick off finals

16 Aug, 2010 08:34 AM
STATE League finals for season 2010 kick off on Saturday, with AFL Tasmania yesterday releasing the schedule for the first week of the finals series.

Launceston will play Clarence in the first qualifying final at Bellerive Oval on Saturday in a much- anticipated one-versus-two clash.

If the Blues lose to Clarence, they will play their next final at Aurora Stadium in week two of the finals series.

A victory over the Roos will see them host a second semi-final at Aurora Stadium in the third week.

Devonport, which finished third after beating North Launceston by 10 points on Saturday, secured a home final.

It will play Glenorchy at Devonport Oval in the second qualifying final, to be played under lights with a 6pm start.

Glenorchy jumped from sixth to fourth with its victory over North Hobart to secure the double chance but faces a difficult road trip north.

North Launceston's loss to Devonport proved costly for the Bombers, with the club slumping from fifth to sixth and missing out on a home elimination final.

The Northern Bombers now face a daunting road trip south to take on North Hobart at North Hobart Oval on Sunday in a cut-throat elimination final.

"One of the main reasons AFL Tasmania and the clubs agreed to implement a five-week finals series this year was to enhance the capacity for each region to host at least one finals match, specifically over the first three weeks of the finals series," AFL Tasmania general manager Scott Wade said.

"The composition of the top six teams this season will definitely mean that all three regions will be hosting finals action in 2010.

"This coming weekend, the South will host two matches and the North- West Coast one game.

"The Launceston Football Club finishing second on the TSL ladder guarantees that the North will also host finals matches this season."
