Bomber Lonergan again in the thick of the action

09 Jun, 2009 07:22 AM
IF YOU were to look to the base of any contest during Essendon's loss to Adelaide at Etihad Stadium on Sunday there is a fair chance you would have seen Beauty Point's Sam Lonergan right in the thick of the action.

The Bomber midfielder, who thrives on the in-and-under style of football, picked up 21 possessions, including 14 in the first half, laid four tackles and had a hand in at least three Essendon goals in one of the more promising efforts of his 28-game career.

Glenorchy's Aaron Joseph continued his fine rookie season by containing Brisbane's Rhan Hooper for the second time this season. In an outstanding display, he kept the dangerous Lion forward to four touches during the Blues' nail-biting win at the Gabba on Saturday night.

Clarence's Justin Sherman started brightly with a 10-possession first term for the Lions and finished the night with 21 touches and a goal.

Another Clarence product, Jack Riewoldt, was an accurate representation of Richmond's season on Friday night.

The Tiger forward started the loss to the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium with three goals before half-time.

But like his teammates, he faded and did not have any more impact in what was Terry Wallace's last match as Richmond coach, a seat that has since been filled by former Devonport footballer Jade Rawlings.

Rawlings's brother Brady could not make it a perfect weekend for the family, as he had a dirty afternoon against St Kilda at Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

The North Melbourne tagger had the job on the smooth-moving Saint Nick Dal Santo and kept him to only four touches in the first quarter. But the St Kilda midfielder was able to break free and finished with 26 possessions and a goal, while Rawlings could only gather six himself.

Evandale's Nathan Grima continued his good start to his career by collecting 16 touches and taking nine marks in the back-half for the Kangaroos.

Devonport's Grant Birchall collected 17 disposals, took eight marks and laid four tackles as Hawthorn downed Sydney at the MCG on Sunday, while Campbell Town's Simon Taylor won 15 hit- outs and collected nine touches.

In yesterday's Queen's Birthday clash against Collingwood at the MCG, George Town's Brad Green collected 16 touches, while Penguin's Russell Robertson kicked 1.3 for Melbourne.
