A SUPERB century to embattled vice-captain Michael Clarke has helped Australia take the honours on day one of the first Test against New Zealand at the Basin Reserve.
Clarke and West Australian Marcus North shared in an unbeaten fifth-wicket partnership of 140 as Australia cruised to 4-316 at stumps.
North, who has been the subject of much speculation over this spot in the team, finished the day unbeaten on 52 from 90 balls.
Katich grafted his way to 79 and shared in a 79-run partner with captain Ricky Ponting.
The skipper was looking in superb touch but was left high-and-dry by Katich, who ran Ponting out for 41.
Recalled opener Phillip Hughes managed just 20, while Mike Hussey was dismissed cheaply for 4.
Right-arm quick Brent Arnel was the pick of the Kiwi bowlers, and finished with the figures of 2-70 from his 20 overs.
