United's Thwaite to face old teammates

31 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
MICHAEL Thwaite was a Melbourne Victory player the last time he was in Launceston.

Tomorrow night, the 28-year-old defender will again visit Aurora Stadium with the dual A-League champions - but as captain of the opposing side.

Gold Coast United's ``Mr Consistent'' was part of Launceston's biggest ever preseason A-League fixture in 2008 when more than 8000 fans turned up to watch his Melbourne Victory side go down 2-1 to Adelaide United.

It's a result that Thwaite would be happy to inflict on his former employers tomorrow night.

``It's a massive game, obviously coming up against my old club,'' Thwaite said.

``Both sides have had their troubles this year, but I think we've got a good chance of taking the points.

``A draw is definitely not going to be good enough for either side. We'll both be going out for a win.''

Tomorrow's game will be the first A-League roster match to be played in Tasmania after six years of preseason friendlies featuring Melbourne Victory.

Thwaite's 2008-09 loan spell with the competition's best supported club yielded a championship-premiership double - an achievement that sits in stark contrast with Gold Coast's current position.

United goes into the match rooted to the bottom of the A-League ladder with 14 points from 17 matches.

The side has not won a game in 2012.

But such is the even nature of the season, the Queenslanders are still a mathematical chance of making the finals.

``We've been very unlucky this year,'' Thwaite said. ``We've lost a lot of games by one goal.

``We've switched off at key times in the match and have paid the price.

``But I think the likes of Newcastle, Adelaide, Melbourne and ourselves, we're all in the same situation.

``The important thing is to focus on being consistent with our performances, continue creating chances and being positive with our approach.

``If we can do that there is still enough time for us to make it into the top six.''

Thwaite will be looking for exciting youngsters Ben Halloran and Maeco Rigters to lead the line tomorrow night.

He said the biggest threat will be a player he describes as ``the deadliest in the league''.

``It's got to be Archie Thompson,'' Thwaite said. ``He's the best striker in the competition.''

Gold Coast will hold an open training session at Aurora Stadium at 10am today.
