Soccer kicks off search for referees

07 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
AS TASMANIA prepares for another soccer campaign, it isn't just the players embarking on preseason training.

The state's referees and assessors are gathering this weekend to get into shape and Football Federation Tasmania is keen to see their numbers boosted.

``Referees come from all walks of life,'' competitions manager George Kalis said.

``Our referees are a professional and excellent mob. Referees are stalwarts of the game. They are dedicated people doing a tough job.''

Two sessions will be held in Hobart and Campbell Town for referees to meet, learn new refereeing techniques and warm up for the year ahead.

Heading up the sessions is Australia's most qualified referee assessor Sharon O'Neill who holds senior FIFA, Asian Football Confederation and Football Federation Australia qualifications.

``Sharon will be a huge asset to our referees preparing for the year ahead,'' Kalis said.

``We're honoured to have her here in Tasmania for a top weekend of referee training.''

More information about becoming a referee can be found at www.footballfedtas.com.au.
