Diehard United fan cuts lonely figure

01 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
AMIDST a crowd of Melbourne Victory shirts, and with girls squealing at the very mention of Harry Kewell's name, Gold Coast United supporter Kieran Lomax cut a lonely figure in the Brisbane Street Mall yesterday.

Mr Lomax is the president of the Gold Coast supporters club, The Beach.

As far as he was aware, he was the only member of the group to make the 1500-kilometre trip south to Launceston.

``Yeah, I can't see too many of our guys coming down for the match,'' Mr Lomax said.

``I've got family down here so I might recruit a few of them.

``I'll try and get a few banners up, and I might try a few chants at the match, but I don't know. I'd say we'll be fairly outnumbered.''

A lack of blue and gold in the Brisbane Street Mall yesterday didn't seem to phase Gold Coast United captain Michael Thwaite, who joined teammates James Brown, Ben Halloran and Peter Jungschlager for the meet-and-greet ahead of tonight's match at Aurora Stadium.

Melbourne Victory players Billy Celeski, Nick Ansell, Luke O'Dea and Peter Franjic also joined in on the fun, signing autographs and posing for photos with young fans.

Socceroo star Harry Kewell wasn't able to be there because of a later flight to Tasmania, but the crowd was still buzzing from the chance to meet his teammates.

Victory defender Ansell said that he was enjoying meeting the club's Tasmanian fans.

``It's something we really enjoy doing, anything that helps build the game,'' the 17-year-old said.

``Hopefully we'll get a few turn out at the match as well.''

Mr Lomax said he understood at least 150 members of the Melbourne Victory supporters' group would be travelling to Launceston for tonight's game.

``I think we'll get a result though,'' he said.

``Two goals to Thwaite in a 2-1 win.''

The game kicks off at 7.30pm.
