Green meets the elite mark

07 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
HE MAY not be deemed good enough to lead the club, but according to Champion Data, Brad Green is still one of Melbourne's few elite players.

The AFL's statistical provider has ranked the 31-year-old George Town product as one of only two Demons, with defender James Frawley, classified as elite.

In comparison, the men who replaced him as skipper - Jack Grimes and Jack Trengove - are seen as above average and average respectively.

Green's ranking comes despite his comparatively poor 2011, when the 241-gamer kicked just 37 goals (down from 55 in 2010) while averaging 16 touches and five marks (down from 20 and seven).

Green is one of three Tasmanian AFL players who can be considered elite, with Hawthorn's Devonport dasher Grant Birchall and Richmond's Coleman Medal winning full-forward Jack Riewoldt.

Birchall had an outstanding 2011, where he averaged 24 touches and seven marks a game and made the 40-man All-Australian squad.

Meanwhile, Riewoldt, of Clarence, still managed 62 majors from 22 games despite an injury-affected second half of the year.

The next best Tasmanians in the average category are: Carlton's Mitch Robinson, Melbourne duo Colin Garland and Jeremy Howe, Gold Coast's Sam Iles, North Melbourne's Nathan Grima and Richmond ruckman Angus Graham.

Essendon's Sam Lonergan and Thomas Bellchambers, Brisbane teammates Ryan Harwood and Aaron Cornelius, Blue Aaron Joseph, Sun Maverick Weller and Western Bulldogs trio Justin Sherman, Brodie Moles and Liam Jones are all considered below average AFL players.

Brisbane's Josh Green, Gold Coast's Luke Russell and Carlton's Marcus Davies are all in the poor category.

Rookie list players Ian Callinan (Adelaide), Daniel Archer (St Kilda) and George Burbury (Geelong), and Gold Coast one-gamer Jacob Gillbee were not rated.

Neither were last year's draftees, including former Launceston defender Tim Mohr at Greater Western Sydney.

The player rankings were published in the 2012 edition of the AFL Prospectus.
