Westbury has Ripper of a day

05 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
WESTBURY remains at the top of the NTCA A grade ladder after an outright win against Riverside yesterday.

The Shamrocks returned to Riverside with a six-run lead and three wickets in hand for the final day of the two-day contest.

Michael Lukic and Wes Ripper started the day with the bat and gained some quick runs for the Shamrocks.

The side were all out for 214, after Ripper top scored for the morning with 36.

Matthew Battle and Nick Spencer took three wickets each for the Shamrocks and Richard Howe took 2-20 of 5.3 overs.

Shamrocks coach Michael Claxton said the good start to the day helped his side win the game.

``We put them (Riverside) in like what was planned about 20 minutes before lunch so the bowlers could go flat out and we picked up four or five wickets,'' he said.

``It's always good to win outright and it's even better to win by 10 wickets so it was a good day.''

Tom Hay was the top scorer for Riverside, making 44.

SOUTH LAUNCESTON batsman Nathan Phillips hit his second century for the year, but it wasn't enough for the Knights to win the game.

The Knights were defeated by George Town by 60 runs in the 1st innings.

Daniel Newton was the best with the ball for George Town taking 3-29 off 11 overs.

Zak Barber and Toby Nankervis took two wickets each.

George Town coach Rohan Pooley said his side fought hard for the win and it was a really good result for the club.

``It was a team effort,'' he said.

``The bowlers bowled really well and it's hard to fault anyone.

``We're still a long way away from finals but we're rapt with the result.''

MOWBRAY battled hard against traditional rival Launceston to win on 1st innings by 113.

The Eagles finished day-one of the two-day match all out for 235.

In return Launceston could only make 100 yesterday.

Cameron Lynch was the top scorer for Launceston with 26 not out.

Eagles captain-coach Clinton Reid said he was very happy with how his side played.

``We weren't sure if we had enough runs on the board, but we batted really well so we are rapt,'' he said.
