BEN Hilfenhaus's lack of recent cricket looks set to continue despite winning a one-day international recall yesterday.
The 28-year-old former bricklayer from Ulverstone has not bowled a ball in anger since the final day of the fourth Test against India on January 29, with Cricket Australia resting the swing king from Tasmania's one-day and Sheffield clashes with New South Wales.
Hilfenhaus, who also missed selection in Australia's Twenty20 series, was yesterday named in the squad for Friday's WACA clash with Sri Lanka, replacing fellow quick Brett Lee, who will miss the next four to six weeks of cricket after X-rays confirmed a fracture of the small toe.
Leg 1But the Tigers paceman is unlikely to play on Friday, with national selector John Inverarity yesterday saying the bowling attack (featuring quicks Mitchell Starc, Ryan Harris, Clint McKay and Daniel Christian) that knocked over India for 151 on Sunday night was unlikely to change.
If he gets a game this summer, it will be Hilfenhaus's first ODI in more than two years.
The last time he represented his country in the 50 over format was against India at Hyderabad on November 5, 2009, when he took 1-72 from his 10 overs in Australia's three-run win.
His fall from grace in ODI circles seemed complete last summer when he failed to make Australia's 30-man squad for its unsuccessful World Cup campaign.
Admittedly, Hilfenhaus's ODI record is not that flash. He has played 15 one-day internationals, taking 18 wickets at 39.83 at an economy rate of 5.67, after making his debut at Bellerive Oval against New Zealand on January 14, 2007.
But his recent performance in the four Tests against India (27 wickets at 17.22) shows he has been rebuilt into more of a wicket-taking option after getting over his knee tendentious issues.
Meanwhile, selectors yesterday confirmed exciting Western Australian all-rounder Mitch Marsh, who is part of the Warriors squad taking on Queensland at the Gabba in the Shield, will join the squad in Adelaide for Sunday's match against India.
