National duty keeps Tigers away

06 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
BEN HILFENHAUS'S Cricket Australia enforced rest will continue into today's Sheffield Shield clash with New South Wales as Tasmania returns to red ball duty at Bellerive Oval.

Hilfenhaus, who took 27 wickets at 17.22 during the recent Test series against India will be one of three big name Tigers on the absentee list.

Spinner Xavier Doherty, who is on national duty with the Australian one-day side, and wicketkeeper Tom Triffit will be on the sidelines.

Triffitt, 21, will miss the rest of the summer after having a pin inserted into his thumb earlier in the week.

``Tom's long term interests were very much considered when this course of action was taken and we look forward to him making a total recovery,'' Tasmanian coach Tim Coyle said about the former Launceston wicketkeeper.

In a further injury blow, rookie paceman Sandy Rogers will also be unavailable to play any cricket for the remainder of the season due to a stress fracture in his back.

Keeper Brady Jones, spinner Jason Krejza and all-rounder Luke Butterworth are into the side which last played first-class cricket on December 9, when it drew with the Blues at Canberra's Manuka Oval.

That contest was highlighted by knocks of 82 and 145 not out from Test opener Ed Cowan and an unbeaten 118 from his partner Steve Cazzulino, but an unbeaten 69-run ninth wicket partnership between Josh Lalor and Ben Rohrer denied the Tigers outright points.

Tasmania, who defeated the Blues in a one-day contest on Saturday, sit third on the Shield table with 16 points, with New South Wales two spots back with just eight points from six games.

This week's Shield clash will be a twilight one, with play beginning at noon and ending at 7pm.

TASMANIA: George Bailey (c), Jackson Bird, Luke Butterworth, Steve Cazzulino, Mark Cosgrove, Ed Cowan, Alex Doolan, Brendan Drew, James Faulkner, Matt Johnston, Brady Jones, Jason Krejza (12th man TBA).

NSW: Stephen O'Keefe (c), Trent Copeland, Scott Coyte, Nathan Hauritz, Moises Henriques, Phil Hughes, Simon Katich, Usman Khawaja, Josh Lalor, Peter Nevill, Ben Rohrer, Steve Smith (12th man TBA).
