It's Bailey's turn at bat, says Coyle

14 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
TASMANIAN coach Tim Coyle believes his captain George Bailey could be the answer to Australia's ODI selection headaches.

With John Inverarity and his team facing several dilemmas regarding the likes of Brad Haddin, Michael Hussey and injured captain Michael Clarke for the remainder of the tri-series, Coyle has suggested his talisman would be leading those waiting in the wings.

The former South Launceston batsman has returned from his sudden call-up as Australia's Twenty20 captain to top-score for his state in both the one-day and four-day competitions and Coyle believes he is ripe for further national honours.

``From a one-day point of view, with Cameron White out of form and (Callum) Ferguson out of favour, that probably puts George pretty much at the top of the queue,'' he said.

``If you're picking players based on form he'd be right up there. His form is really good and the injury to Clarke might just open the door for him.''

Since leading Australia in two T20s against India, Bailey has returned to state duties to hit 94 off 99 balls in a three-wicket win over New South Wales in the Ryobi Cup, before a man-of-the-match top-score of 117 in the six-wicket Sheffield Shield victory over the same opponent.

Coyle said the 29-year-old, who was called into the Aussie ODI squad for the Chappell-Hadlee Series in 2010 but did not play a game, had noticeably benefited from national selection.

``He's come back in really good batting form. His Sheffield Shield innings was outstanding, a match-winning innings, and his 90 in the one-day game, we could not have asked for him to come back in better form and that's probably down to the confidence of being a national captain.''

Coyle added that the increased exposure had not altered Bailey.

``I have not noticed a bit of difference in him. George Bailey does not change much. He's the same level-headed captain he's always been and I think he's a real chance to play one-day cricket for Australia.''

Australia's next game in the triangular one-day tournament is against Sri Lanka on Friday with Clarke ruled out with a strained hamstring, Haddin under pressure from blazing understudy Matthew Wade and Hussey on an enforced rest.
