FORMER Launceston all-rounder James Faulkner was last night snapped up Indian Premier League franchise Kings XI Punjab for $190,000 in the Twenty20 competition's player auction.
The Tasmanian and Melbourne Stars young-gun made his Australian debut on Wednesday night as part of George Bailey's T20 outfit. The 21-year-old finished with 0-18 off two overs, but didn't get a hit. But his form in the Big Bash League was outstanding, finishing with 13 wickets at 17.61 and an economy rate of 7.89.
Meanwhile, Tasmania's and Australia's No.1 limited overs spinner Xavier Doherty was overlooked.
Doherty, who is part of Australia's one-day squad which takes on India at the MCG today, also made his international Twenty20 debut during the week, going wicketless in the two games against the Indians.
The 29-year-old George Town spinner won selection in that series after taking eight wickets at 27.62 and an economy rate of 7.36 as Hobart Hurricanes captain in the Big Bash League.
But his 40-year-old Australian teammmate Brad Hogg was picked up by Rajasthan Royals for $180,000. The other Australians bought included veterans Brad Hodge ( $475,000 by Rajasthan Royals) and Mitchell Johnson ($300,000 to Mumbai Indians).
Hobart Hurricanes batsman Owais Shah and Tigers and Hobart paceman Ben Laughlin failed to attract a bid.
