TOP Tasmanian boxers Luke Jackson and Jackson Woods are one step closer to Olympics selection after winning gold at the Australian amateur boxing championships in Hobart yesterday.
Jackson, of Hobart, defeated Victoria's Jai Alexander 12-6 in the elite men's 60 kilogram final, while Woods, of Latrobe, put on an impressive performance to defeat Victoria's Andrew Maloney 16-12 in the 52kg division.
They will now compete at the Oceania championships at the end of March where their Olympic fate will be determined.
Jackson, a two-time Commonwealth Games representative, said yesterday's bout wasn't the best he'd ever fought, but it was a good learning experience.
``I wanted it so much that I tended to stand there a bit too much to try and trade with him,'' the 27-year-old said after the fight.
``He was very hungry, he wanted to win too, but I managed to pull it out in the end.
``I could have boxed a bit better and used my skills a bit more, but it's all experience .th.th. we're still learning.''
And despite knowing he's the clear favourite to win the Oceania title, Jackson doesn't want to get too head strong.
At the same stage four years ago, the Glenorchy fighter defeated Queenslander Paul Fleming in the Australian championships but lost to the same opponent at the Oceania titles which cost him a spot on the Olympic team.
``The Australian title are usually harder but I take nothing for granted,'' Jackson said.
``I'll have a couple of days off training and then I'll get back into it for six weeks.''
Woods was one point down after the opening round in his bout against Maloney which caused him to become anxious about winning the title.
``I wasn't very confident,'' the 19-year-old said.
``I came out in the third round and I was one down, because he got a couple of quick ones on me, which kind of worried me a bit.
``Then I just brought it home at the end of the round and scored all the points that I needed.''
This will be the first time Woods has competed at the Oceania titles.
