Jackson to step out of ring

01 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
TASMANIAN boxing talisman Luke Jackson plans to hang up his gloves whatever the outcome of his Olympic showdown this week.

Hobart's 60-kilogram fighter heads into the national titles in his home town today knowing he is the clear favourite to take both the Australian championship and then the Oceania.

But, having been there before, Jackson is taking nothing for granted and has vowed to end his boxing career whether he makes it to London or not.

``This will be the end either way,'' he said.

``I've made the decision that I want to move on to other things in life.

``I'm 27, I'm getting on a bit and have got to start repaying the favours of my father, who has supported me since I missed out on Beijing, and my girlfriend.

``I can't keep putting them through all this - training twice a day, six days a week, never really eating much or going out and having fun. I've got to think of the future.''

At the same stage four years ago, the Glenorchy fighter defeated Queenslander Paul Fleming but lost to the same opponent at the Oceania titles which cost him a spot on the Olympic team.

With only the national champion progressing in each division this year, Jackson knows this week's titles at New Town's Aurora Stadium represent his biggest hurdle to reaching London.

``I know if I win this I should win the Oceanias,'' he said.

``If I lose, the last four years have all been for nothing. If it comes down to hard work, dedication and deserving, I'm already on the team, but it doesn't.

``No one in this division has come close to me, but that means nothing.

``If I can make the Olympics, I'll be able to walk away happy. If I don't there will always be that regret there.''

Having made the switch from the 57kg division in which he won a Commonwealth Games bronze in 2006, Jackson is more comfortable at 60kg saying he did not have to face his usual struggle to ditch 3kg this week.

Former Boxing Tasmania president Ralph Belbin agreed that Jackson deserves Olympic selection.

``He is the only one who has ticked all the boxes to go to the Games,'' he said.

``This event is crucially important for him. It's his big chance to go to the Olympics. I don't think he plans a long career after this so it is possibly his last shot but he's very fit and his preparation has been as good as it gets.''

Tasmania has a team of 30 boxers from clubs around the state including Prospect, Newstead, Latrobe, Burnie, Sorell and Queenstown.

The titles conclude on Sunday when finals will confirm who progresses to the Oceania championships in March.
