OLYMPIC hopeful Luke Jackson has made it to the Australian amateur boxing championship finals, despite a controversial performance in the ring at yesterday's national titles, being held in Hobart.
The Hobart boxer defeated New South Wales' George Kambosas on countback in the elite men's 60kg division.
Kambosas protested after the bout because of a low-blow injury gained during the fight. He won the protest, which left the fight draw at 16-16.
``When you have a draw the judges and referees countback,'' Tasmanian state manager Craig Tobler said.
``And Luke Jackson won the fight on a countback. I believe it wasn't that lower-blow, I thought it hit on the belt line, but we still got Luke through and he won the fight.''
Jackson will rest today before he heads back into the ring for the finals tomorrow.
Latrobe's Jackson Woods won his second fight for the championships against Aaron Wellman, of Victoria.
Woods gave a stylish performance to win the fight 16-9 in the 52kg division.
His cousin Luke, a Commonwealth Games representative, also performed well, beating Brett Mather, of Western Australia, 12-9.
Australian title-holder Dylan Cooney, of Latrobe, won by stoppage in the second round of the youth 56kg division.
Newstead boxer Max March put up a brave fight against Queensland's Nayham Hinchcliffe in the 64kg youth competition, but was defeated 19-7.
