PROSPECT boxer Jak Hadley is the first on the Tasmanian team to win a gold medal at the Australian amateur boxing championships, being held in Hobart.

Hadley defeated Queensland's Dennis Kovats in the 57 kilogram schoolboys' division 11-6 yesterday.

Tasmania state manager Craig Tobler said Hadley fought the fight courageously given it was a tough bout.

Sorrell boxer Marshall Kruse was defeated by Dean Clarke, of Victoria, 13-11 in schoolboys' 44kg division.

Although, Kruse still won the silver medal.

Also winning a silver medal yesterday was Bridgewater's Luke Adams.

Adams lost to Queensland's Justin Huni 8-4 in the schoolboys' competition.

Tasmanians Aaron Crossan and Zac Faulkner, both lost their bouts in the youth competition.

Latrobe boxer Dylan Cooney picked up the silver medal in a close match against Matthew Tasboult, of Queensland. Tasboult won the 56kg youth bout 8-6.

Latrobe's Luke Woods was eliminated from the elite men's division after being defeated by Victoria's Qamil Balla 14-13.

``Although we only got the one gold medal we still got six silver medals,'' Tobler said.

Jackson Woods and Luke Jackson will compete in the elite men's division finals today.
