Hadley builds on impressive record

08 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
IN the not-too-distant future, talented sportsman Jak Hadley may have a very important decision to make - choosing between his love for football or boxing.

On Saturday, the 14-year-old Queechy High School student won a gold medal for Tasmania in the schoolboys' 57-kilogram division at the Australian amateur boxing championships in Hobart.

Hadley, who has been boxing for just under two years, beat Queensland teenager Dennis Kovacs 11-6 to win the title, taking his fledgling career record to five fights, three wins.

The unassuming rising star fights out of the Prospect Boxing Club under the watchful eye of head coach Steve Blizzard and is now the club's second Australian title winner after Blizzard's son, Tyler, won a gold medal at the national titles in 2011.

It was Hadley's first tilt at a major title and, despite eventually winning the final comfortably on points, he faced the daunting task of facing off against a much taller, larger opponent in the gold-medal bout.

``He had more reach than me so I thought I was going to struggle because I'd never fought anyone who was bigger than me - taller than me - and I didn't know how I was going to handle it,'' Hadley said.

By the end of round 1, Hadley was trailing his opponent 2-1 on points.

``I knew that I had to go out in the second round and throw a few more punches. My corner told me to put some combinations together, and thankfully it worked,'' Hadley said.

By the end of round 2, Hadley had turned his fortunes around and the scores were locked at five-all before he rounded out the fight with a dominant performance to win the third and final round five points to one.

But boxing isn't the only sport that Hadley focuses his talents on.

He also plays junior football for South Launceston and for the past four years has undertaken preseason training with the Fingal senior football team purely to increase his already impressive fitness levels.

Last season, he won South Launceston's best-and-fairest award for under-14s and finished third overall in the association's count.

Despite his success in the ring, Hadley still plans to continue playing football at South for the upcoming season.

Hadley hopes to defend his gold medal win at next year's national titles, but more immediately is back in training for his next fight in Launceston next month.
