TASMANIA'S best amateur boxers will have their final sparring session in Launceston today in preparation for the Australian Amateur Boxing Championships.
The 30-member state team will train at the Prospect Boxing Club for the national titles being held at the Aurora Sports Stadium, in Hobart, from February 1 to 5.
Tasmanian team manager Craig Tobler said he expected the local fighters to perform well at the championships with two or three strong contenders to make Olympic selections.
``Luke Jackson, of Hobart, and Latrobe's Dylan Hardy and Luke Woods would be our prime chances to make the Olympics team,'' Tobler said.
Jackson, 26, and Woods, 19, are Commonwealth Games representatives while Hardy is a youth Commonwealth Games gold medallist.
``Latrobe's Dylan Cooney is a youth Australian title-holder and Tyler Blizzard of the Prospect gym currently holds an Australian title - and I would expect both of those to do well.
``Jackson Woods, of Latrobe, has just come back from the youth Commonwealth Games and we would expect him to do extremely well along with Sorell's Aaron Crossan who is a current Australian champion and has moved up a weight into the under-60 kilogram division.''
The Australian amateur championships will attract 281 boxers from around the country and make for great viewing for boxing fans.
``It is for Olympic selection and fans will see the best amateur boxers in the country before maybe seeing them on TV at the Olympic Games later in the year,'' Tobler said.
