Sherry defends $500 taxi fare

02 Sep, 2010 01:00 AM
TASMANIAN Labor Senator Nick Sherry yesterday defended a $500 taxi ride from Devonport to Hobart on Monday, claiming there were no cars available in the Commonwealth car fleet.

The Assistant Treasurer's spokesman said yesterday that Senator Sherry did not order the taxi, rather, it was arranged for him by the Comcar service.

"We understand that Comcar has a longstanding policy of allocating a local hire car or taxi service where Comcar-plated vehicles are not available," he said.

Senator Sherry racked up more than $20,000 in Comcar travel expenses over the last six months of 2009, according to federal Finance Department documents.
