Right-to-die bill rejected State MHAs vote down voluntary euthanasia

05 Nov, 2009 01:00 AM
THE House of Assembly last night rejected a bill to decriminalise and regulate voluntary euthanasia for terminally ill people in Tasmania.

The Dying with Dignity Bill, tabled by Greens leader Nick McKim earlier this year, was defeated 15 votes to seven.

The MHAs voted largely along party lines despite being given a conscience vote.

Despite the outcome, a disappointed Mr McKim pledged to continue his push to legalise voluntary euthanasia.

"It's disappointing to me and more importantly to people who are terminally ill," he said.
