Polling booths close - counting begins

20 Mar, 2010 05:13 PM
Polls have closed around Tasmania in the 2010 state election, and counting has begun.

The Tasmanian Electoral Commission expects to have first preference figures available from about 6.30pm tonight.

First preference voting results will be counted at polling booths, and then reported to the official tally room at Wrest Point in Sandy Bay.

According to the TEC, election night results can give a good indication of who is likely to be elected and which party is likely to form government.

However, the final list of elected candidates and the number of seats each party will win will not be known until the Hare-Clark scrutiny has been completed.

Earlier today, the state's three political party leaders cast their vote in their electorates in and around Hobart.

Many polling booths in Northern Tasmania were packed this morning, as people attempted to get their voting done early.
