PM to announce Launceston kidney funds

12 Oct, 2009 07:37 AM
PRIME Minister Kevin Rudd is expected to announce funding for Launceston's renal satellite service when he arrives in the city this morning.

It is understood Mr Rudd, together with Parliamentary Secretary for Health Mark Butler and Bass Labor MHR Jodie Campbell, will announce $732,400 to be provided to construct the service at the Launceston Community Health Centre at Kings Meadows.

The new service will operate six days a week and have the capacity for 16 renal stations.

The funding is part of the Federal Government's $15 million commitment to build an integrated care centre in the area.

The number of Australians being diagnosed with kidney disease is increasing at the rate of 6 per cent a year and Northern Area Health chief John Kirwan has previously said the Launceston General Hospital's renal unit was overcrowded.

The approval processes for the renal satellite unit will be completed this month and the centre will open in December.

Mr Rudd's Tasmanian visit will also involve a community cabinet meeting in the Hobart suburb of New Town tomorrow.

It will be presented as a public forum as well as a formal meeting of Cabinet ministers.

Liberal Senator Guy Barnett said Mr Rudd should take the opportunity while in Tasmania to answer questions about the costs and time-frame of the National Broadband Network roll-out, as well as proposed changes to the Medicare levy.
