FORMER Launceston CIB detective and Liberal Senator Stephen Parry will move to Launceston next year to take over outgoing Senator Guy Barnett's office.
The move will ensure the Tasmanian Liberal Senate team covers the state's major population centres.
Senator Parry has been splitting his time between Burnie and Hobart, but from next year will be based in Launceston.
He said yesterday he had been a member of the Launceston Chamber of Commerce for the past few years, so he had stayed in touch with local issues.
Senator Parry said the Burnie office would stay open to maintain that "critical" statewide coverage.
He said he would fund it privately, with contributions from the rest of the Senate team.
Senator Parry said having the Senate team spread geographically around the state had worked well.
"When we had six senators it was perfect. Eastern Shore, Hobart, two in Launceston, Devonport, Burnie," he said.
Senator Parry also cleared up a rumour he was going to open an office in Perth two years ago.
"No, that was ABC conjecture, it wasn't me," he said.
"It was incorrect."
The recent federal election result in Tasmania was a bad one for the Liberal Party, and Senator Parry pinpointed the key reason why.
"The National Broadband Network - that was the worst aspect for us," he said.
Senator Parry said if the Liberals won government with the support of the independents then the broadband policy would need to be "sorted out".
