Offices in North not on parties' agenda

16 Mar, 2010 03:25 PM
A NORTHERN-based government department is still not on the agenda of any political party.

Premier David Bartlett and Opposition Leader Will Hodgman came the closest to promising some decentralisation of the bureaucracy, which is mainly Hobart based.

However, Greens leader Nick McKim seemed to be answering a different question in his response, which focused on access to public services.

Mr Bartlett said the Government had already gone some way to establishing public servants in the North, with the Tasmanian Skills Institute centred in Launceston and the Tasmanian Academy based on the North-West Coast.

"It's a terrific idea, but it also has to be practical," he said.

Mr Bartlett said there were 12,300 public servants employed north of Oatlands, and 17,600 south of the town.

"There is an imbalance, but not as dramatic as one might expect," he said.

Mr Hodgman said he was committed to getting public servants to spend more time working with local communities, using their local knowledge to better develop Government programs.

He also said the Liberals had argued for regional representation in boards and other government entities, and campaigned to stop services being moved to the capital.

"We have resisted in the past moves by the Government to centralise (services in Hobart)," he said.

Mr Hodgman said he wanted to empower local communities to make decisions.

Mr McKim spoke about access to public services as being very important for people in regional and rural areas.

He said the Greens' $4.5million policy to attract professionals - such as doctors, nurses and teachers - to those areas would help strengthen their "social fabric".
