Nosedive: Labor's opinion poll pain

18 May, 2010 04:05 PM
LABOR'S vote has crashed below the Greens' as voters show confusion over the new minority Government arrangement.

The latest EMRS poll results showed Labor could win just seven seats if the election was held tomorrow.

Premier David Bartlett continued his slide in popularity to 26 per cent - a trend that has continued since May last year.

Opposition Leader Will Hodgman was the big winner and the poll seemed to vindicate his stance during and after the election on not dealing with the Greens.

Mr Hodgman's decision not to deal with the Greens played especially well in Bass and Braddon, and even saw him outperform Mr Bartlett in his home electorate of Denison.

"The EMRS poll shows that people understand and appreciate the decisions we took following the March 20 election," Mr Hodgman said.

Support for Greens leader Nick McKim increased following the election, which he said was "affirmation" of the Greens' decision to take cabinet positions.

Deputy Premier Lara Giddings said voters' question marks were understandable, but she was confident Labor and the Greens could deliver four years of stable government.

I must respectfully disagree with Mr Hodgman's comment that the recent poll vindicates his decision not to deal with the Greens. How wrong! Reading these tea leaves shows that there is a sizeable block of voters that wish the Liberals to be in power, and that Will should've bitten the bullet and negotiated an arrangement to win government - very much like what his British counterpart David Cameron did with the left leaning social democrats. Team Bartlett is still on the nose, but note that the Greens and McKim's individual standings have INCREASED in these polls. Will Hodgman, forget the old-style politics as this may well consign your party to a long stint in the doldrums. Voters like me would prefer to see you negotiate with Nick and govern, rather than fire blanks from the Opposition benches.

I don't care if people think its 'cool' to vote green. Why would intelligent people vote for a party that ends up being part of a ridiculous hung parliament? Did so many people in tasmania not think about ramifications? Have a look at the many multi-party governments especially in europe and see how unstable they are. Talk about stupidity en masse.

Pete 2.15 I think you'll find that many people voted Green precisely BECAUSE they thought of the ramifications and wanted a coalition government. Or rather did not want either of the two main parties to govern by themselves. Are you suggesting the previous majority Labor government was stable?!!! And why is this government ridiculous? Looks like it may bring an end to the decades old divisions in the forestry industry....... it'll no doubt fix the troubled Tasmania Tomorrow experiment..... it will probably bring about some electoral reform too. That's not bad for starters! It's only been going for a month.
