MLC threat to block IGA legislation

MLC threat to block IGA legislation

13 Feb, 2012 11:29 AM
Twelve of Tasmania's 15 MLCs say they will block any legislation tabled in State Parliament related to the controversial $276 million intergovernmental forestry agreement.

The MLCs say they will block all legislation unless the state government takes action against environmental activists and campaigns that the forest industry claims is damaging their business.

Every MLC except for the two Labor members - Derwent MLC Craig Farrell and Hobart MLC Doug Parkinson - and independent Rosevears MLC Kerry Finch, are supporting the unusual step, which is to be formally announced this afternoon.

This will effectly put an end to hopes that additional national parks could be established in Tasmania and would mean no regional development funding would be available.

Bold move. People don't want government handouts, they want to go to work. Governments earn revenue by helping to create jobs. Not by shutting down business and putting us all on the dole. Someone has to hold this bunch of nit wits accountable.

Well done to the MLCs who have taken a stand against the outrageous and un-Australian behaviour of environmental activists in our overseas markets. A welcome outbreak of common sense at last!

Wasn't the IGA meant to provide formal reserve areas of native forest (which incidentally do not have a viable woodchip market) to appease conservation groups in exchange for $276 million to help restructure the forest industry? Now the industry groups have got their money and bailed out Gunns and FT, they want out of the other side of the agreement and are openly threatening to undermine the process. Conservation groups have not received one outcome yet from the agreement while logging continues unabated.

A somewhat Dodo-like attitude!

The expression "hippies at a love-in" springs to mind.

WHo are these people and how do they think they can get away with attempting to block free speech?

Hello! Is this for real or just a pre emptive April Fools joke? If it's real then some people have found that they do have the proverbial (balls) to actually do something for the people of tasmania and not for huggers.

Major betrayal of environmentalists by Launceston MLC Rosemary Armitage?

About time to take action against economic vandalism imposed on the state by the irresponsible actions from the tree huggers, greens and the fanatics. The environmentalists should be held accountable for the poor economic status of Tasmania when compared to the prosperous Western Australia.

Does this mean Gunns will have to hand back their share already spent?

A clear example of how out of touch the MLC's are. Weren't these the folks who took private and secret briefings from Gunns lobbyists and rolled the pulp mill act through without scutiny. Perhaps some just want some media as its coming around to being elected again?
