Learning paths are divided

NONE of the political leaders answered the education question last night - instead they repeated their own plans for more changes to the system.

Two school curriculum changes will be followed by a third next year, while post-year-10 education will continue to be transformed whoever is in power after Saturday.

Premier David Bartlett has been bullish on his Tasmania Tomorrow education reforms, and he continued that last night.

"I'm happy to risk my political future on this," Mr Bartlett said.

He brought out the statistic that 86 per cent of Australian jobs required a post-year-10 qualification - but just 47 per cent of Tasmania's young people were getting one.

Mr Bartlett said the Tasmania Tomorrow system offered the best option to keep young Tasmanians learning.

Liberal leader Will Hodgman came the closest to promising some stability in the education system, when he said he would not force the education system into reforms that didn't work.

He pledged to turn the Tasmanian Academy and Polytechnic back into the old college system, while retaining the Tasmanian Skills Institute.

"We will overhaul Tasmania Tomorrow because in many respects it has failed," Mr Hodgman said.

He also repeated his commitment to address school retention rates by putting extra funding into high schools.

Greens leader Nick McKim said the college system "shouldn't have been experimented on" through the Tasmania Tomorrow reforms.

He promised to roll back the system completely, and restore the colleges and TAFE.

Mr McKim also pledged to address retention rates, but said money should be spent in early years education to instill the value of schooling into young people.
