Labor's poll focus on education, irrigation, internet

27 Jul, 2009 10:27 AM
LONG-TERM education, irrigation and internet goals make up Premier David Bartlett's election platform as well as his "new generation Labor" vision for the future.

In his address to party faithful yesterday, Mr Bartlett promised to create a "clever, kind and connected Tasmania", setting long-term goals to:

•Lead the nation in literacy and numeracy by 2016.

•By 2014 deliver an additional 210,000 megalitres of water a year to make Tasmania the food bowl of the nation.

•Secure Tasmania as the most connected place on the planet by 2014.

Mr Bartlett said that a positive future would come if Labor won majority government at the election next March, emphasising that there was more to be done.

"We are at a watershed moment in the history of this state and I have never been more optimistic about the future of Tasmania," Mr Bartlett said.

"We are now 10 years into a 20-year transformation of this state - and we are getting on with the job."

Mr Bartlett used the address to talk up the opportunities that the broadband roll-out would have for the health system and to reaffirm the benefits that investment in renewable energy would have for the state.

"We have the strongest knowledge bank in wind and water energy anywhere in South-East Asia," Mr Bartlett said.

"I want us to boldly seize the renewable energy agenda and stamp Tasmania into the global imagination."
