Concerns raised over top cop post delays

16 Jun, 2010 08:32 AM
THE state government has still not advertised for a new police commissioner and is not likely to for at least a fortnight.

The state has not had a permanent top cop since October 2008, when former police commissioner Jack Johnston stood aside after being charged with disclosing official secrets.

A judge later ordered a permanent stay on proceedings against Mr Johnston, but code of conduct allegations hampered the commissioner's return to work.

He handed Premier David Bartlett his resignation on February 1.

Windermere MLC Ivan Dean said it was concerning that it was taking so long to fill the position.

"It's not good enough," Mr Dean said.

"How long is it going to go on for?

"I've had a number of police contact me, wondering what's going on.

"They just simply want a permanent commissioner of police."

Police Minister Lin Thorp said the process had been delayed by code of conduct complaints against Acting Police Commissioner Darren Hine.

The complaints were dismissed on May 15.

A spokesman for Mr Bartlett said the Department of Premier and Cabinet was in the process of selecting a recruitment firm and expected to complete that process in the next two weeks.

"The process of selecting a commissioner will start shortly after that, with the first stage advertised in newspapers," the spokesman said.

"A new commissioner will be appointed as soon as possible, while following due process."
