Battle for Bass erupts in war of words

12 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
THE federal seat of Bass looks like it could again be a key battleground between the two major parties after tensions between Bass Labor MHR Geoff Lyons and Liberal candidate Andrew Nikolic emerged last week.

Mr Lyons attacked his main competition for the next election, due in 2014, during a speech on Thursday informing federal Parliament about government investments in Bass, labelling Mr Nikolic a fly-in candidate.

He said Mr Nikolic had falsely claimed credit for a $2.5-million pledge for silt removal in the Tamar River as the pledge was negotiated by former Bass Liberal candidate, Steve Titmus, in the 2010 federal election campaign.

''We have committed $11.5 million for flood levees and I remain committed to the long-term health of the Tamar River,'' Mr Lyons said.

''The new fly-in candidate for Bass, a bureaucrat from Canberra, claims credit for the $2.5 million that was negotiated by Steve Titmus. Compare this to the $11.5 million from Labor.''

Mr Nikolic said Mr Lyons had tried to confuse levee money with silt money.

The Liberal candidate said Mr Lyons had chosen to attack him in Parliament, knowing that he could not respond.

He objected to being called a fly-in candidate, saying he had owned a Riverside home for 26 years.

Mr Nikolic said his job at the Defence Department had, until last year, required him to work out of Tasmania.

He said he had to fight to get the Coalition to commit $2.5 million for silt removal in the Bass package for the next election.

''Political promises are not automatically forwarded to subsequent elections,'' he said.

Mr Nikolic was pre-selected by the Liberal Party three years out from the next federal election in June to pry Bass from Mr Lyons.

The fight for Braddon is also being prepared early with three prospective candidates vying for pre-selection by the Liberals.

Devonport woman Jacqui Lambie was the third person to confirm interest in taking the federal seat, joining North Motton farmer Glynn Williams and Devonport real estate agent Michael Burr.

Money for silt removal?

He's got me interested!

But nice to hear from Mr. Lyons although his comments are hardly positive or informative.

His recent statements have been deafeningly brief as to content and number.

I hope that we have a good range of candidates who are interested in representing the Bass electors, not "the party".

Sadly, Mr. Nikolic is also a "party man".

Two consecutive days we get comments from Geoff Lyons - wow!

All of them negative of course.

You weren't elected to be derogatory about competition, you were elected to do a job and that was represent the constituents of Bass - so far we have seen little for your parliamentary income Geoff.

You have months left to impress us - get on with the job.

Bass needs your utmost input into Health, Education and Policing not a war of words. Don't demean yourself and your position with school boy antics.

Hmm.

His recent comments about the Pulp Mill make it pretty clear the man from Canberra has a bit to learn about Bass. :-)

I,m rather perplexed with Labor,s outburst against Mr Nikolic. This is in the face of the absolute silence from both Mr Lyons and Mr Adams regarding the forestry issues currently on everyones mind.Surely ,as representatives of our state they must have an opinion regarding Mr McKims recent outburst damming progress in our state.

Well Mr Lyons and Mr Adams what have you to say about it??

Why haven,t the media asked them this very question.??

"Mr Nikolic said he had to fight to get the Coalition to commit $2.5 million for silt removal in the Bass package for the next election."

Some fight must have lasted 2 min.The Examiner ran a story on silt 30/01/2012,and Mr Nikolic posted the commitment on this site at 9:08:58 AM, the very same morning.

"I can confirm that $2.5 million for emergency dredging of the Tamar would be made available by a federal Liberal government."

Could this be a sign of the losing side clutching at straws? Too late, Labor. Don't slam the door on the way out.
