PREMIER David Bartlett is not yet sure whether he will be available for a Northern Tasmanian debate between the political leaders before the March state election.
Both Opposition Leader Will Hodgman and Greens leader Nick McKim are keen to travel to Launceston to be part of the pre-election debate.
But Mr Bartlett said that he was already committed to two pre-election debates so far.
The Examiner wants to host a debate between the state's three party leaders in the week of the state election.
The one-hour debate will be open to the public and free of charge.
"I am the first Premier in Tasmania to debate the leaders of both parties," Mr Bartlett said.
"In the last campaign, there was no debate at all.
"My schedule will be locked in closer to the election once I have had a chance to assess these competing requests on their merits."
In contrast, Mr McKim said that he was ready to debate Mr Bartlett "any time, any place and on any issue".
He challenged Mr Bartlett to do the same.
"It is vitally important that people in Northern Tasmania get the chance to hear political leaders debate the future of our state," Mr McKim said.
"This is what accountability is all about."
Mr Hodgman said that the event was an excellent initiative by The Examiner to give the state's political leaders a Northern-based debate in the last week of the state election.
"It will be extremely disappointing if the Premier snubs Northern Tasmania by avoiding this debate," Mr Hodgman said.
The editor of The Examiner, Fiona Reynolds, said that scheduled debates by the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and TasCOSS were both Hobart events.
"We believe that Northern Tasmanians would welcome the opportunity to see our political leaders outline their party positions in person before going to the ballot box," Ms Reynolds said.
