Airport safety issues have not been grounded: Titmus

26 Jul, 2010 08:53 AM
BASS Liberal candidate Steve Titmus says federal Transport Minister Anthony Albanese's measures to address air safety at Tasmania's two largest airports do not go far enough.

Prominent businessman and aviation enthusiast Dick Smith last week went public with concerns about air safety at Launceston Airport, decrying the lack of airspace control between 10pm and 6am when aircraft are required to land without control tower assistance.

On Friday Mr Albanese announced that Launceston Airport would come under 24-hour air traffic control within six months.

However, Mr Titmus yesterday questioned why the introduction of the measure would take six months.

"Clearly, this issue is far from resolved," Mr Titmus said.

"The government needs to explain how its proposed solution is the best way forward."
