`I'm quitting', says Bass MHR Jodie Campbell

30 Oct, 2009 05:30 PM
BASS Labor MHR Jodie Campbell is quitting politics. The 37-year-old told her staff last night that she won't recontest the marginal seat at next year's federal election.

Ms Campbell has denied she'll be a "lame duck" MP, saying she wanted to be open with voters but not waste taxpayers' money by forcing a byelection if she walked away now.

She said she told Prime Minister Kevin Rudd about a month ago that she wanted to devote more time to her two daughters.

Ms Campbell maintained the right to not talk about her personal life, in particular her relationship with the man she describes as her former partner, Roland Kurt Small.

Ms Campbell is adamant that she was not pushed by the Labor Party hierachy after a series of personal life dramas, including an alleged assault by her former de facto Roland Small in August.

The former Launceston deputy mayor has no future career plans but has ruled out a return to politics.

Ms Campbell told her two daughters yesterday morning by phone from Canberra that she would not be going away again after next year's federal election.

They (Sommer, 7, and Isabella, 6) were very excited, she said.

Mr Small appeared in the Launceston Magistrates Court today but again didn't enter a plea to one charge of assaulting the MP.

Mr Small, 36, is accused of punching Ms Campbell in the left eye, twisting her fingers and hitting her in the stomach at her Mowbray home on August 24.

"What will happen in court, I'll let that destiny play out," Ms Campbell said yesterday. It's in the hands of the court.

"It's a police matter. That will take on its own journey."

She said the announcement that she was quitting politics was not timed to coincide with the court appearance or because she was spotted with Mr Small on Monday despite the pair being the subject of a police family violence order.

"It has nothing to do with it whatsoever," she said. "This has been on my mind for quite a few months."

Ms Campbell seemed excited herself as she talked about her decision not to recontest the federal seat she has held for just two years.

"Something I've realised over the last few months is that maybe more so than ever they need their mum and I want to be there for them. So my decision at the end of the day is based on those two beautiful girls," she said.

Ms Campbell never intended to be a one-term MP.

"My intention at the time was that I would be there for the long term but things change in life and I am certain that the people of Bass, the people I doorknock and the people I talk with will certainly understand that," she explained.

Ms Campbell denies she was pushed out of the job by the Labor party hierarchy or colleagues, saying she had their full support when she told Prime Minister Kevin Rudd of her decision about four weeks ago.

And she does not believe quitting now and forcing a by-election would be better than waiting until the election to vacate the seat. It would be a waste of taxpayers money, she said.

The election could be March, it could be October.

Jodie Campbell's been a disaster right from the word go. And don't believe this rubbish about it being her choice. I am friend with two Labor Party members and they say that the absentee member for Bass was summoned to the Whip's office in Canberra on Tuesday and told it was time for her to go and she was none too happy about it and threatened a byelection. They apparently said "we'll wear it if that's the price of getting rid of you". She then tried to enlist the support of some "allies" and found, poor dear, that she didn't have any. Apparently the Examiner's report on her sickie spent with Mr Small on Monday was the last straw. Don't be fooled. Campbell was pushed. She'd never give up such a high paying job where she did so little in return without being pushed. She can't continue representing the people of Bass because she never started in the first place. And one other thing - Ms Campbell keeps talking about doorknocking. Have she ever doorknocked your house? Now she's got all time in the world to spend with Mr Small but without all that lovely money. Bye.

Now that she's going perhaps this paper can get off her case and report some 'real' news.

'Wants to spend more time with her children’ - correct me if I am wrong but last I heard she had taken a day off parliament to spend it with someone she describes as her former partner. Let’s be real here. As fantastic as it is that she is going let’s not buy into this self serving nonsense about how hard it has been trying to juggle a political career and raising a family. Many have done it before and many will continue to do it.

Sorry, one other quick thing. There is one sad aspect to this story. And that is that I won't get the chance to vote her out.

I think she should stand down NOW! As to forcing a bye election being a waste of tax payers money, how productive and proactive has she been till now? She has been nothing but an embarrassing waste of tax payers money till now any way. I say step down and let some one else have a go, I know my tax dollars would be better off for it.

Roissin McCann getting a bit antsy about Jodie not appearing on her program this afternoon... saying it is not really surprising considering her record of failing to appear on afternoon drive. She also said that her media advisor, Emma Brindley, was on annual leave today and no one could answer any questions. So the day she announces her resignation the media advisor is on leave.... What a shambles....

What a woefully uninformed comment by dave. There is no such thing as being "robbed by preferences". Preferences ensure that a candidate cannot be elected if opposed by more than 50% of the electorate, as was the case with Ferguson. Unsurprising, given that he's a hard right wing religious fanatic.

Could the Examiner please have an internet poll with the following question "Should Jodie Campbell resign now and force a byelection?". I think the vast majority of Bass electors would consider a byelection money extremely well spent.

I think this is a shame for Jodie on a personal level - i have no doubt she has worked very hard although i can see why she has come in for the criticism she has - i hope she's developed a thick skin during her time in politics because some of your comments are downright rude and unfair. I'm not sure of the real story, but i guess she found life a little difficult and so she took the very responsible decision to call it a day - you have to give her credit for that surely. I have always found her very personable and professional. She met with me for an hour last year and gave me her full attention and followed up on the issue i brought to her and i was very satisfied with the outcome. I'm not sure of Rosemary Armitage's politics but maybe she ought to consider running; she is someone else in local politics that i have great admiration and time for.
