 Hospitals prepare for overtime restrictions

Hospitals prepare for overtime restrictions

14 Dec, 2011 07:21 AM
THE government has hospital volunteers and ward clerks on standby to cover Tasmanian nurses' 48 hour overtime bans from this afternoon.

A Health Department spokesman said late yesterday that all three of the state's major public hospitals had contingency plans in place to cope with the industrial action.

Australian Nursing Federation Tasmanian secretary Neroli Ellis said that there was no way that the three hospitals could cope without nurses working overtime and double shifts.

``They (the hospitals) can't get any (nurse) relief anywhere, which is pretty indicative of how the system is already so reliant on overtime - that's why we are doing it,'' Ms Ellis said.

``We are trying to expose the system breakdown.''

The overtime bans are part of the ANF's industrial action decided on unanimously by nurses at meetings around the state last week to protest over the major staff and bed cuts being made by hospitals to achieve their required budget savings.

The department spokesman said that the Launceston General Hospital had not needed to cancel elective surgery or transfer patients to other facilities to cope with the overtime bans.

``However, this will be reviewed each day,'' he said.

At both the North-West General and the Royal Hobart hospitals, additional staff have been rostered to cover the period of the bans including hospital aides, casual nursing staff and ward attendants.

The North-West General and the Mersey Hospital will work together to address staffing shortfalls through pooled resources.

Patients transfers between hospitals will take place if necessary.

Some non-urgent elective surgery has already been cancelled so that staff can be redeployed to emergency, high dependency and intensive care units.

The Royal Hobart Hospital has rostered on extra ward clerks and volunteers have been asked to help boost numbers.

Ms Ellis said that the overtime bans will take place from 2.30pm.

She believes it will be a one-off action at this stage to highlight the dire situation of the hospitals even before major budget cuts are implemented.

DAMNED sure I wouldn't want to be cared for by a .......... ward clerk or volunteer if I was sick.

CAN NEROLI tell me why nurses are paying dues to a union that supports the government which is now sacking them?

IF she can justify this WITHOUT saying there is no affiliation to the Labor party I would definitely support the actions now being taken. HOWEVER, it is my view patient's welfare is being severely compromised and actions being taken are quite delinquent.

Sorry nurses you have lost me.

AND O'Byrne and GIDDINGS you are a disgrace.

What the hell is a hospital volunteer going to do if someone is seriously ill etc, nothing as they are not trained to assist anyone, get Giddings and some of her cronies to volunteer then they will see first hand what a disaster they have created, but thats not even close to being likely LOL.

Nurses are continuing to provide care as before. What they won't do is spend half a shift answering the phone, running to pathology or the kitchen and cleaning beds. None of the above are nursing duties but are given to nurses as a cost saving measure.

This action is being done to PROTECT quality of patient care, to keep beds OPEN.

The reason we do double shifts (18 hours!) is because the govt won't employ more staff (which is cheaper than double shifts!)

How is that a problem for you "fed up"? Would you rather we did nothing and let beds close and staff be cut?

How are nurses meant to get their message across? They work long hours, and their there when you need them. However with the decrease in their numbers, it will have to mean a decrease in care, and like you and me NURSE DONT WANT THAT. Nurse are proud of the work they do, they are in the profession because they care. Yet they are being penalised for caring. I admire every one of those nurses, and hope that they are listened to. This state will end up back in the 1700's without professionals, and rubbing ourselves in potatoes leaves as the only 'cure' for any of our ailments. God Bless You

To 'fed up' each political party is welcome to forward their health policies to the nurses. It's up to the individual member to cast their vote at the ballot box!

This action is to provide safe staffing for now and the future! Many nurses (myself included) will be retiring in the next decade, we need our future experienced nurses to remain employed. They need to be able to develop their skills ready for our exit out of the workforce.

I hate working double shifts, it's mentally and physically draining. Mistakes do happen!

Here is something interesting. The budget papers show the Department of Premier and Cabinet plan to contribute to the budget savings by $1.6m, or 2% of their budget. Health & Human services have to contribute $100m or 8% of their budget. And this increases to $150m a year by 2014-15. That seems fair...........well it does if you are a spin doctor in DPAC!!
