Levi, at 616 grams, and Jaxon, at 1.4 kilograms, were born 12 weeks premature.

Mrs Ireland, like the mother of many other premature - or premmie - babies, sought reassurance and support from those who had been down the same track.

When she gave birth to her sons, now 1, in Melbourne, she was referred to the Life's Little Treasures Foundation's treasure time groups.

The groups are designed to allow families of premature or sick infants to connect with others who have had the same experiences.

For Mrs Ireland, of Prospect, her nearest group was on the North-West Coast.

''(When Levi had no voice) I was connected with another mum who was going through the same thing with her daughter, it helped,'' Mrs Ireland said.

While she has made friends for life through the group, Mrs Ireland wants other premmie families to have easy access to the same support she received.

She has extended the reach of Life's Little Treasures to Launceston, creating the opportunity for more mothers to connect with friendships and support networks.

Next week, the first Launceston treasure time group session will take place at the Ravenswood Child and Family Centre.

''It's different to sit and talk with other premmie mums, it is about the support and understanding,'' Mrs Ireland said.

''It's just nice to talk to people who have been there and come out the other side, and to hear that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.''
