Wildlife need for urban trees

05 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
CANBERRA _ Large trees in urban areas provide a crucial role for wildlife, a new study has found.

Researchers at the Australian National University say trees in cities provide habitat that is vital in sustaining biodiversity and bird life.

The team said it is the first time a study of this type has been done anywhere in the world.

Karen Stagoll, a PhD candidate at the university's Fenner School of Environment and Society, said large trees were ``urgently needed'' in urban landscapes, she said.

``We found that parks with more large eucalypts had more bird species and higher bird numbers, including more native woodland-dependent birds,'' Ms Stagoll said.
