MORE than 1500 people raised more than $100,000 for the Cancer Council Tasmania across the weekend during the 10th Relay for Life event in Launceston.
Twenty-four-hour relays in Launceston and Hobart wound up yesterday, and while participants may have been fatigued, their hearts were warmed by the fact they had supported a cause and had fun at the same time.
In Launceston, 71 teams took to the track at the St Leonards Athletics Centre.
Like all other teams, team Yahoo had at least one team member on the track at all times.
One member, Jock Hamilton, spent 18 hours on the track, walking barefoot the entire time.
"He even managed to read the newspaper while walking," team captain Josh Barnett said.
"And for three hours (Saturday) night, we all walked around the track, playing the guitar and singing songs for people along the way."
Mr Barnett said the event had brought the best out of people, with good vibes and a carnival-like atmosphere flooding the arena.
"There's a sense of achievement out there," he said.
"Most people in the team either had connections to cancer or have lost relatives so this gives us a chance to reflect on that and help a cause."
