Truck driver killed in NW accident

25 Nov, 2009 05:25 PM
THE driver of a milk tanker that rolled over on Grooms Cross Road, at Irishtown in the State's North-West, this morning died at the scene.

Police say the accident happened about 8.30 am when the west bound prime mover left the roadway and rolled. The driver was trapped in the cabin.

"The driver of the prime mover, a 67-year-old Shearwater man, died as a result of his injuries," a police spokesman said.

Police from Smithton, Western Forensic Services, SES, Tasmania Ambulance Service and Western District Accident Investigation attended the scene.

Traffic was interrupted for approximately nine hours.

Police have asked for anyone who may have seen a white Western Star prime mover towing a milk tanker before the crash to contact Burnie Accident Investigation Services on 6434 5276 or 131 444.

It is the second truck accident in the State this week with a Launceston truck driver receiving leg injuries when his fully loaded log truck rolled on the Poatina Road near Cressy.

The Tasmanian road toll now stands at 57 compared to 33 at the same time last year.

I am sorry for the passing of another driver, but I must say this. As early as this morning on the Bridport to Gladstone road I was witness to the speed and total disregard to common road useage by trucks & their drivers. I make no appologies for this input, I was forced off the road by folded logging trucks twice by the way they were cutting corners on blind sections and acting as if the road was soley their domain. OK, there are the decent drivers, but they are far out weighed by the "Cowboys" whom do not give a fig about other road users. Exhaust brakes to the max even when not needed at any hour of the day or night, they don't care, there is no one to hear them except the innocent people trying to sleep etc. The trucking fraternity needs to be means tested and more stringent laws are needed to control the trucks on Tasmanian roads.

Peter, Don't be so stereotypical! There's nothing to say that this accident was caused by speed or negligence on behalf of the driver. The family doesn't need or want to read comments like yours, they're dealing with the death of their husband, father, uncle, cousin, brother-in-law etc. Pull your head in!

Agree 100% with you Peter. Anyone venturing onto the roads cannot fail to be amazed and frightened by the behaviour of our 'professional' drivers.
