Tassie skateboarders make impact at titles

TASSIE skateboarders made an impression at Skateboarding Australia's amateur series, which was held in Devonport yesterday.

Hobart's Nathan Mason, 21, won the Tasmanian open qualifier, with 20-year-old Kristian Rowell, of Turners Beach, coming second and Ben Walters, 21, of Launceston, third. Fergus Doherty, 14, of Hobart, won the junior qualifier, with Beau Kelly, 11, of Hobart, second and Bradley ``Biscuit'' Saunders, 9, of Beaufort in Victoria, third.

They will compete at the national finals in Melbourne next month.

Wildcards Laif Johannesen, 26, of Lauderdale, and Christoph Speer, 20, of Hobart, will compete in the open finals as well.

Skateboarding Australia's general manager Glenn Walker said the talent in Tasmania was exceptional.

Devonport was the fifth stop for qualifiers in the country, with South Australia and Western Australia the final two.

``Tassie's one of our favourite stops. We've had an amazing turnout,'' Mr Walker said.
