Seniors embrace Lego challenge

12 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
ANYONE might look at a room of senior residents playing with Lego and think they had gone a little mad.

But Lego building was a serious business for Elphinwood Gardens residents yesterday.

About 20 of the village's residents took part in a competition to build the best Lego construction.

The competition is part of a 26-week series of challenges with residents competing for a $1000 cash prize.

Yesterday, work began on a range of constructions from houses and cityscapes to ships and vehicles.

Rita Haward, who turns 90 in April, was one of the challenge's participants.

The former primary school teacher and lover of cryptic crosswords said she thought it was a great activity that helped to bring everyone together.

''It also gets the brain working,'' she said.

The residents have until noon on Friday to make their construction.

A photo of the finished product will be sent to the Elphinwood Gardens head office for judging.

Other challenges in the continuing competition include art and writing exercises.

Lego is just another way to keep the brain working. It's colourful and fun too. Students are using Lego in many different way including making robots (robotics). Interesting thought - the young getting as much fun as the elderly in something we used to enjoy as kids (in my case 40 years ago).
